Indoor life keeps cats safe, but it can also get a little predictable. A bit of variety in the day, a new texture or toy to investigate, can go a long way toward keeping a cat curious and content. Every cat has their own personality and preferences, so think of these as simple ideas to try and see what your cat enjoys most.
Short play sessions, often
Play can be a fun way to add some variety and activity to your cat's day. Some cats seem to enjoy several shorter bursts of play, while others may prefer something different. Follow your cat's lead and see what gets their attention.
Mix up the movement
Cats often seem drawn to prey-like movement: quick darts, pauses, and things that skitter away rather than toward them. Bouncing and unpredictable movement can also make a toy interesting to watch and chase. Our Interactive Cat Springs are a nice example; they're light enough to flick across a floor and bounce in ways that are hard to predict, which many cats find hard to resist.
Let them use their whole body
Wrestling, bunny-kicking, and grabbing with both front paws are all common ways cats play. Having a toy that's a fair target for that kind of play can save your forearms! Our Handmade Cat Kicker Toy is sized for exactly that kind of grab-and-kick play.
Rotate the toy basket
A toy that's been out for weeks can start to feel like furniture. Putting a few away and bringing them back out later can make them feel new again, which is an easy way to add variety without buying anything.
Enrichment isn't only toys
Cardboard boxes, paper bags with the handles removed, a window perch with a view of birds, or scattering a few treats for your cat to hunt down can all provide a bit of mental stimulation. Vertical space can be a favorite too, since many cats like to survey their kingdom from up high.
Follow your cat's lead
Some cats are enthusiastic chasers, while others prefer to watch and pounce once. Neither is wrong. Paying attention to what your particular cat enjoys can be a great way to figure out what makes them happy.
